Eight individuals linked to Houston clinics face felony charges including illegal abortions and unlicensed medical practice under Texas’ strict abortion law, Attorney General Ken Paxton said.
- On Wednesday, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced eight people tied to a Houston-area midwife were arrested and indicted for practicing medicine without a license, linking them to illegal clinics.
- Earlier this year, felony charges were filed against Maria Margarita Rojas, 49, accusing her of illegal abortions and unlicensed clinic operations under the Texas Human Life Protection Act in Waller County, Texas.
- The eight indicted include Yaimara Hernandez Alvarez, Alina Valeron Leon, Dalia Coromoto Yanez, Yhonder Lebrun Acosta, Liunet Grandales Estrada, Gerardo Otero Aguero, Sabiel Bosch Gongora and Jose Manuel Cendan Ley, with at least one accused of illegally performing an abortion.
- Paxton said in a press release that `These dens of fake doctors will not be allowed to operate in Texas` and those responsible will be held accountable under Texas law protecting the unborn.
- Advocates called the prosecution a sham and criticized the timing; providers risk $100,000 penalties and license loss, while some arrestees are foreign nationals and Houston Planned Parenthood closed over a week earlier.
