78-year-old priest unable to walk carried out of ICE facility by fellow detainees
He was freed after a federal judge granted his habeas petition, and his attorney says he lost more than 30 pounds in detention.
On Tuesday, 78-year-old Ugandan priest Edward Nalwamba was released from an ICE detention facility in Aurora, Colorado, after a federal judge granted his habeas corpus petition, with two fellow detainees carrying him to his ride.
Nalwamba had been held for 13 months, during which attorney Joy Athanasiou says his health deteriorated dramatically; the formerly active priest suffered from pneumonia and lost more than 30 pounds while detained.
Colorado U.S. Sen. John Hickenlooper criticized the release, stating his staff's request for wheelchair assistance was ignored by GEO staff, while the Department of Homeland Security maintains they provide comprehensive medical care.
Although now released, Nalwamba's underlying immigration case remains unresolved, and his supporters are working to arrange medical appointments while he struggles to walk without assistance.
DHS stated that Nalwamba entered the country legally on January 1, 2002, but overstayed his visa, resulting in a final order of removal on April 8, 2010; officials maintain he remains in the country illegally.
