Cambodia will send 73 online scam suspects to South Korea

The 73 suspects are accused of defrauding 869 Koreans of 48.6 billion won ($33 million) in scams, marking the largest repatriation of Korean criminal suspects from abroad.

  • On Jan. 22, 2026, presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung announced that 73 South Korean suspects will return on a chartered plane from Incheon International Airport Friday and be handed to investigative authorities.
  • Following public outrage, authorities revealed trafficked foreign nationals were recruited with false job offers and forced to run scams in near-slavery conditions in Cambodia.
  • Investigators say a joint team raided seven scam compounds including Sihanoukville, Poipet and Mondulkiri Province, swindling 486.7 billion won from 869 victims and detaining 65 men and eight women among about 260 South Koreans in recent months.
  • Authorities added that `Arrest warrants have been issued for all of the suspects, and they will be handed over to investigative authorities immediately upon arrival for thorough investigation and judicial proceedings,' Kang said, as the South Korean government continues its crackdown.
  • Since October, authorities have repatriated about 130 suspects from Cambodia and less than 30 from Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines, while the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime estimates losses of $18 billion to $37 billion in 2023.
