GARNER - On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, an armistice between the Allied nations and Germany ended the “Great War” (World War I). “Armistice Day”, as it was known, became a federal holiday in the United States in 1938. Following World War II and the Korean War, the name was changed to “Veterans Day” in 1954 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to honor American veterans of all wars.
