Meta Partners with Space Startup Overview Energy to Secure Solar Power for Data Centers
- On Monday, April 27, 2026, Meta Platforms signed an agreement with Overview Energy to secure up to 1 gigawatt of power from space-based solar infrastructure for its data centers by the end of the decade.
- Meta's data centers consumed more than 18,000 gigawatt-hours of electricity in 2024, creating urgent demand for new power sources. Overview's infrared beam technology bypasses battery storage by transmitting power to solar farms at night.
- The Ashburn, Virginia-based startup plans to fly 1,000 satellites in geosynchronous orbit by 2030, with CEO Marc Berte expecting each spacecraft to provide power for more than 10 years. Initial orbital demonstrations are expected in 2028.
- Nat Sahlstrom, Meta vice president of energy and sustainability, said the technology represents "a transformative step forward by leveraging existing terrestrial infrastructure to deliver new, uninterrupted energy from orbit." Financial terms were not disclosed.
- Meta has also partnered with Vistra, Oklo, and TerraPower to secure electricity, positioning the company as a leading corporate buyer of nuclear power. The company committed to building 30 gigawatts of renewable power sources.
