18 motorcycle crashes reported in single day at Sturgis Rally in South Dakota
STURGIS, SOUTH DAKOTA, AUG 4 – The 85th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally saw one fatality and 17 injuries in 18 crashes, with 38 DUI arrests reported, marking a decrease from last year, officials said.
- On Aug. 4, the South Dakota Highway Patrol reported 18 crashes, including one fatal, between 6 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 3 and 6 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4, at the 85th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
- The South Dakota Department of Public Safety noted most crashes caused by rider actions, including two involving four-wheeled vehicles, and brake issues, flat tires and steering failures contributed to injuries.
- In one incident, a 58-year-old rider lost control of his 2019 Harley-Davidson on U.S. Highway 16A Saturday and collided with three other motorcycles.
- By 6 a.m. Monday, the Highway Patrol reported 38 DUI arrests, down from 50 last year in Sturgis.
- Reporting will continue, and Angela George of the Argus Leader will cover the rally through Aug. 8 at Sturgis City Hall.
