UNITED STATES, JUL 25 – The Department of Education probes potential national origin discrimination in exclusive Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals scholarships at five U.S. universities, examining compliance with civil rights laws.
- On Tuesday the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights launched investigations into five universities, determining if scholarships are restricted to DACA or undocumented students.
- Complaints from the Legal Insurrection Foundation’s Equal Protection Project triggered the investigations, highlighting Title VI’s ban on national origin discrimination and Trainor’s warning against excluding U.S. citizens.
- Among them the University of Louisville’s Sagar Patagundi Scholarship, the University of Nebraska Omaha’s Dreamer’s Pathway Scholarship and the University of Miami’s U Dreamers Program support DACA or undocumented students exclusively, with the Department of Education saying this may violate civil rights laws.
- The founder of the Equal Protection Project, William A. Jacobson, said `Discrimination against American-born students must not be tolerated`, adding `Protecting equal access to education includes protecting the rights of American-born students`.
- Looking ahead the investigations will also scrutinize race and color exclusions, the Department of Education says the probe covers Louisville, Nebraska Omaha, Miami, Michigan and Western Michigan University, and says the investigation aligns with President Trump’s promise to put America first.
