‘Significant casualties’ after explosion at Alberta military base: MP
Defense Minister David McGuinty said deaths and injuries were reported as firefighters battled a fast-moving blaze driven by high winds.
On Saturday, Federal National Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed fatalities and injuries from a 'serious incident' that sparked a major fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, Alberta.
High wind gusts up to 100 km/h drove the fire across the base fence into the nearby municipality, according to the Municipal District of Wainwright.
Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith are in close contact coordinating the response, while the nearby community provides hospital and firefighting support to the base.
Defense Minister McGuinty described the situation as 'very, very active and delicate,' with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police investigating the incident at the scene.
Elections Alberta closed the Wainwright Communiplex advance vote location due to the fire, though officials confirmed no evacuation orders are currently in effect for the surrounding area.
