Arizona executes inmate who set a man on fire, killing him, in 2002 attack
Prosecutors said McGill used a gasoline and Styrofoam mixture in the attack, leaving Nova Banta with burns over 75% of her body.
Arizona executed 63-year-old Leroy McGill by lethal injection for the 2002 killing of Charles Perez, who died after being set on fire during an attack in Phoenix.
McGill was convicted in 2004 of murder, attempted murder, arson, and endangerment after prosecutors said he attacked Perez and Nova Banta with gasoline and a lit match.
The execution marked Arizona’s first execution of 2026 and was carried out at the state prison complex in Florence using pentobarbital.
