Attack by Islamic State-affiliated group in Mali kills 48 people, official says
The attackers accused civilians of exposing positions to the Malian army, and ISSP has not claimed responsibility.
Militants affiliated with the Islamic State in Sahel Province killed 48 people in the Ménaka region of Mali over the weekend, The Associated Press reported Tuesday. The attack occurred between Sunday night and Monday morning.
Fighters attacked civilians, accusing them of revealing ISSP positions to the Malian army, said Moussa Ag Acharatoumane, a Tuareg leader and member of the National Transitional Council. Casualties included children and elderly.
The Malian army announced on Monday it struck a major base 65 kilometers southwest of Ménaka, targeting "several terrorist elements as well as military equipment and logistical supplies."
ISSP operates primarily in the Ménaka region, facing stiff competition from the militant group Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin across Burkina Faso and Niger. The rivalry shapes militant dynamics regionally.
The Sahel region has become the deadliest place in the world for extremism, as military governments in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger struggle to curb armed attacks despite turning to Russia for help.
