Attack on convoy in Nigeria's Borno kills 15, soldiers say
Two soldiers said the convoy was hit by a roadside mine and gunfire, and six wounded troops were taken to hospital.
On Saturday, a convoy in Nigeria's Borno state struck a landmine and came under fire, killing 15 people, including 10 Nigerian soldiers and five members of the Civilian Joint Task Force patrolling near Cameroon.
Borno serves as the center of an insurgency led by Boko Haram and its breakaway faction, Islamic State West Africa Province, which frequently target troops and civilians in Nigeria's northeast.
Eight soldiers died instantly when their vehicle hit the landmine; gunmen then fired on a second vehicle, killing two more soldiers and five members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, with six wounded taken to Maimalari Military Hospital.
Military spokesperson Captain Mohammed Goni declined requests for comment regarding the incident, while Reuters could not independently verify the casualty figures reported by soldiers familiar with patrol operations near Gamboru Ngala.
Despite sustained military operations, Boko Haram and related groups continue to attack troops and civilians using roadside bombs and ambushes, as evidenced by a coordinated assault last week that killed at least 10 soldiers and wounded at least 20 others.
