EU sanctions nearly 1,600 Russian people and firms linked to drone and missile parts
More than half of the new listings target the ballistic missile supply chain, and 77 lawmakers tied to occupied Ukrainian elections were also sanctioned.
On Monday, The European Union imposed sanctions on 1,600 Russian individuals and companies, specifically targeting those involved in the production chain for drones and ballistic missiles.
Representing the largest single listing since the Kremlin launched its full-scale war five years ago, the bloc also targeted 77 people accused of organizing 'sham elections' in occupied Ukrainian territories.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated that more than half of the new measures "address the production chain for the ballistic missiles Russia uses to kill Ukrainian civilians every day."
German Minister Johann Wadephul described the measures as an "unprecedented sanction blow" to President Vladimir Putin, adding, "The message is clear: Russia cannot and will not win this war."
While President Donald Trump declared an "energy ceasefire" between Russia and Ukraine over the weekend, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russian forces continue to target energy facilities unabated.
The European Union approves some 1,600 new listings of sanctions associated with the Russian military industry, in the largest expansion since the war in Ukraine, extending the sanctions of chemical weapons to 2031.
