4 men from Polk County found safe after boat capsizes during fishing trip
Four men aged 18 to 90 were rescued after their catamaran capsized 26 miles offshore; all were taken to hospital for medical checks, authorities said.
- On Tuesday, the U.S. Coast Guard located four men reported missing Monday night and returned them to shore after finding their capsized boat about 26 miles west of Clearwater Pass.
- Launching at about 9:30 a.m. Monday, the group left Seminole Street Boat Ramp in the catamaran `Money Well Wasted`, expected back by 4 p.m., and reported missing at 8:30 p.m. after the vessel took on water and overturned between noon and 1 p.m.
- A multi-agency search by the Clearwater Police Department and the U.S. Coast Guard ran through the night and intensified at daybreak, finding Dennis Woods, 70; Clarence Woods, 90; Cris Harding Sr., 42; and Cris Harding Jr., 18 clinging to their overturned vessel after about 20 hours.
- They were brought ashore to Sand Key, where emergency medical services awaited the four men shortly after 9 a.m.; one was wheeled off on a stretcher and relatives embraced the survivors.
- Officials noted communication gaps offshore, saying cell phones stop working about 10 12 miles offshore, Clearwater Police Chief Eric Gandy said, and the Clearwater Police Department will stay engaged.
