4 Killed, Including 3 Children, in Oregon Elementary School Shooting; Suspect Also Dead
The suspect, who police said was a 16-year-old Bend resident, gained entrance into the school by shooting through locked doors, officials said. A good Samaritan shot and killed the 16-year-old, according to authorities, who credited that person with preventing further loss.
Police received a 911 call at 12:59 p.m. Thursday reporting gunfire into a vehicle outside the school, prompting officers to arrive within three minutes to respond to the active shooter.
Bend Police Department Communications Manager Sheila Miller confirmed four fatalities, though some officials cite a preliminary figure of five, and investigators have not determined whether the suspect was shot by police or a bystander.
Authorities established a reunification site at Journey Church on South Highway 97 for students and families, while medics transported at least two people to a local hospital in unknown conditions.
The Bend-La Pine School District canceled classes for Friday, October 16, 2026, as the FBI and ATF assist local authorities in investigating the suspect's motive and tracing the weapon used.
