BMW targets margin recovery with cuts and local production

  • BMW announced a €2 billion investment in German production on Wednesday, alongside a redundancy program expected to affect 8,000 jobs in Germany as part of its recovery strategy.
  • The Munich-based carmaker's recovery plan follows a June profit warning, its third in three years, as weak sales in China and US tariffs pressured global margins and forced strategic action.
  • BMW's Munich plant, more than 100 years old, will transition exclusively to electric vehicle production by 2027, including the BMW i3, while a new battery facility in Lower Bavaria will boost regional job creation.
  • Shares rose more than 3% on Wednesday as investors embraced the strategy, with Bernstein analyst Stephen Reitman noting, "BMW understands the solution is not simply cost-cutting. It is also pursuing growth with innovative products."
  • By 2028, BMW aims for automotive operating margins between 3% and 5%, with plans to restore margins to 8% to 10% by the early 2030s through simplified model ranges and the Neue Klasse electric vehicle architecture.
