Man Arrested for Beating 3-Year-Old to Death over Potty Training, Sheriff’s Office Says

- On Thursday, Aug. 13, 2026, Assumption Parish deputies arrested Belle Rose resident Bernard JR Fleander, 26, on a first-degree murder charge following a 3-year-old girl's death.
- Investigators allege Fleander beat the child during potty training at his home in the 6700 block of Highway 308, where he was caring for several children.
- Fleander had one of the older children drive them to Assumption Community Hospital in Napoleonville shortly after 3 a.m. Thursday, where medical staff pronounced the girl dead despite lifesaving measures.
- Following an autopsy that classified the death as a homicide, authorities booked Fleander into the Assumption Parish Detention Center on first-degree murder and failure to appear charges.
- Sheriff's Office spokesperson Lonny Cavalier confirmed the Department of Child and Family Services was alerted to the situation as detectives continue their investigation.
