The 19-year-old suspect was impaired and charged with three counts of second-degree murder after a hit-and-run killed three pedestrians near a university crosswalk, police said.
- Around 11 p.m. on Oct. 30, a hit-and-run at North Euclid Avenue and East Second Street killed three University of Arizona students: Sophia Akimi Troetel, Josiah Patrick Santos, and Katya Rosaura Castillo Mendoza.
- Officers determined the driver was impaired by alcohol or drugs, and police said impairment, speeding, and failure to yield to pedestrians in a marked crosswalk contributed to the collision.
- Nineteen-Year-Old Louis John Artal turned himself in early Oct. 31 and was identified by police; a judge set his bond at $250,000 and his attorney said he is not denying involvement.
- University officials extended condolences and said support resources are available, while Adriana Grijalva, Student Body President, announced plans to honor the students and a GoFundMe was launched for Josiah Santos' family as local community members gathered at the intersection.
- Investigators identified a 2019 Porsche Boxster speeding above the posted 30 mph speed limit, police said the Tucson Police Department investigation remains ongoing and charges will be amended following the medical examiner's notification.
