Officials ID Off-Duty Firefighters Among 3 Killed in Lake Pepin Boat Crash
A multi-agency search used boats, drones and helicopters before responders recovered the three missing passengers, officials said.
Three people were found dead on Sunday, July 12, after a 27-foot pontoon boat collided with a commercial barge on Lake Pepin, according to the Pepin County Sheriff's Office.
Emergency responders were called at 10:45 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, to find three survivors clinging to the overturned vessel who reported three others missing from the boat.
Wabasha Fire Chief Darren Sheeley confirmed two of the victims were off-duty firefighters, while the incident occurred offshore from the YMCA Camp on Deer Island with no camp staff or campers involved.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is leading the investigation, with victims' bodies transported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office for autopsies to determine cause of death.
This incident follows a recent uptick in fatal boat-related accidents across Wisconsin, including three children who drowned on Geneva Lake just over a week ago during a powerful storm.
