- Chicago hairstylist Zahrie Walls, 27, died on June 21, 2025, after falling from a yacht and being rescued from the waters of Lake Michigan close to Navy Pier.
- Walls fell into the water without a life jacket and did not know how to swim, amid strong currents and winds during Black Yacht Weekend.
- First responders retrieved Walls from the water by approximately 5:30 p.m. in the vicinity of East Grand Avenue in Chicago, and she was later declared deceased at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
- Law enforcement opened an investigation into the incident, while event organizers stated the death was unrelated to official Black Yacht Weekend activities.
