2026 Mazda CX-5 review
The entry-level CX-5 adds AWD and a roomier body, but Mazda has raised the starting price by more than $3,000 and dropped several features.
- The 2026 Mazda CX-5 Pure has launched as the least expensive third-generation mid-sized SUV from Japan, priced from $39,990 before on-road costs. It adds AWD, a larger body, and a bigger engine compared to the previous Maxx.
- Replacing the G20 2.0-litre engine, the Pure utilizes a larger G25 2.5-litre engine generating 132kW and 242Nm of torque. Premium 95 RON petrol increases output to 138kW and 257Nm respectively.
- Standard equipment includes a 12.9-inch touchscreen, 17-inch alloy wheels, and ADAS safety systems featuring AEB. However, the Pure loses wireless phone charging and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
- The KM-series range offers no hybrid powertrain options, with a new-generation system slated for 2028. Reviews note the removal of physical buttons from the interior design as a backward step.
- Despite weighing at least 60kg more than the previous AWD equivalent, the Pure maintains a combined fuel consumption of 7.4 litres per 100km and achieves a carbon dioxide emissions rating of 173g/km under ADR 81/02 standards.

The new-generation Mazda CX-5 is utterly remarkable. Not because it blazes new design trails, offers a revolutionary drivetrain or is bubbling over with innovation, but because it tries to do none of these things. Mazda CX-5 Car Review
Say hello to… …the Mazda CX-5, the latest generation of Mazda’s mid-size SUV that’s launching with a 2.5-litre petrol engine that has some hybridisation, but no plug-in capability (yet). While this approach may limit its fleet appeal and tax friendliness, Mazda believes that by fitting a large petrol engine that doesn’t need to be worked as hard as a smaller unit, real-world fuel efficiency will be better.
