2 South Carolina utility workers narrowly escape injury after tree falls on truck during winter storm
Two linemen were unharmed after a tree fell on their truck amid an ice storm that caused outages to surge from 3,000 to over 20,000, Blue Ridge Electric reported.
- On Sunday, Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative said a tree fell onto the cab of a utility truck on Highway 8 while two linemen were headed to a call, and both escaped unharmed.
- Around 3 p.m., heavy ice and wind caused Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative outages to jump from 3,000 to over 20,000 in 90 minutes, with saturated ground and lingering winds raising tree-fall risks.
- Reinforcements have arrived from Indiana and Georgia, along with Berkeley County and Horry County crews, to assist Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative’s restoration of over 7,400 miles of line.
- The cooperative said its offices will be closed on Monday so staff can remain focused on restoration and member support, while sister co-ops will begin assisting Monday morning and continue for days after.
- The cooperative warned and quoted its Facebook post saying `These are dangerous and unforgiving conditions, and we truly believe those two were covered in prayer today`, urging residents to stay at least 30 feet away and call 800-240-3400, and to assume every downed line is live and dangerous.
