- London, San Francisco, and Beijing are among 19 global cities that achieved remarkable reductions in air pollution, slashing two airway-aggravating pollutants by more than 20% since 2010, according to an analysis by Breathe Cities.
- The report, shared exclusively with The Guardian, examined 100 global cities and found 'substantial reductions' can be achieved within 15 years through deliberate actions like adding cycle lanes and restricting fossil fuel power plants.
- Beijing and Warsaw led in reducing fine particulate pollution by more than 45%, while Amsterdam and Rotterdam saw the greatest improvement in NO2, with cuts above 40%.
- Cecilia Vaca Jones, executive director of Breathe Cities, said, 'This report shows that cities can achieve what was once thought impossible: cutting toxic air pollution by 20 to 45 per cent in a little over a decade.'
- Imperial College London scientist Gary Fuller noted that while no safe levels of PM2 exist, bold policies can improve air quality, potentially saving millions of lives from diseases like asthma and cancer.
