OPP in eastern Ontario laid 150 impaired driving charges during Festive RIDE season

OPP charged 150 impaired drivers and issued 28 licence suspensions during over 1,600 RIDE checks aimed at enforcing new stricter impaired-driving laws.

  • Ontario Provincial Police officers across eastern Ontario arrested 150 motorists during the Festive RIDE campaign, running more than 1,600 checks between Nov. 20 and New Year's Day.
  • Amid efforts to curb impaired driving, the province enacted Highway Traffic Act changes on Jan. 1, including lifetime driver's licence suspension and mandatory remedial education.
  • In a detachment breakdown, OPP charged 13 impaired drivers in Ottawa, 22 in Russell County, eight in Renfrew, nine in Grenville and seven in Lanark, with RIDE checks ranging from small teams to larger events.
  • Each arrested driver received 90-day licence suspensions, seven-day vehicle impoundments and court appearances, while officers issued 28 licence suspensions after roadside screenings.
  • While the Festive RIDE campaign has wrapped up for the season, the OPP said RIDE programs will continue to keep enforcement active beyond the holiday period.
