14 Kuki Hostages Freed After a Month; Six Abducted Naga Men yet to Be Found
On Tuesday, 14 Kuki civilians were released in Manipur's Senapati district after nearly a month in captivity, ending a standoff facilitated by church bodies and civil society groups.
The hostage crisis followed the May 13 killing of three church leaders, which triggered the abduction of at least 44 civilians by Kuki and Naga groups across Kangpokpi and Senapati districts.
United Naga Council President Ng Lorho confirmed the release followed commitments from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, relayed through Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, to establish the status of six missing Naga men.
Following formal procedures, Manipur Police transported the 14 individuals securely to Taphou Kuki village, where they are undergoing medical check-ups with local administration oversight.
Six Naga men remain missing with their fate unknown, prompting Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to appeal for their reciprocal release to foster reconciliation and dialogue.
