An Italian child who spent almost a decade in a coma after eating raw milk cheese has died. Mattia Maestri died aged 13 after spending nine years in a coma having contracted an E. coli infection, which led to HUS from raw milk cheese in Trento in 2017.
Mattia Maestri, a boy from Italy, died at the age of 13, nine years after eating cheese contaminated with E. coli. She was only four years old when she became ill, and since then she has remained in an irreversible vegetative state.
