12 dead and others injured in wildfire in southern Spain
Late Thursday, a wildfire near Almeria, Spain, killed 12 people, with some victims discovered in vehicles in the hamlet of Bedar. Around 150 firefighters battled the blaze as it spread rapidly.
Scorching temperatures triggered orange weather warnings across parts of Andalusia, creating dangerous conditions for the blaze. Spain has experienced increasingly frequent heatwaves in recent years, with temperatures often exceeding 40C.
The fire injured at least six people, while authorities evacuated residents to a cultural centre. The Military Emergency Unit was scheduled to join the ongoing firefighting efforts.
Confirming the rising toll, the regional government of Andalusia stated, "The number of people who died in the fire in Los Gallardos has risen to 12." Regional leader Juanma Moreno expressed devastation, writing, "Our hearts are heavy and we are devastated by grief."
Witnesses told authorities a fallen power line may have ignited dry vegetation as the fire spread. This follows Spain's worst wildfire year in 2025, when more than 393,000 hectares burned according to the European Forest Fire Information System .
