114th Bishop of Worcester announced by Downing Street
WORCESTERSHIRE, ENGLAND, JUL 29 – Rt Revd Hugh Nelson will continue as Bishop to the Armed Forces while leading plans to expand young disciples and worship communities in the Diocese of Worcester.
- On Tuesday, the Rt Revd Hugh Nelson was officially appointed as the 114th Bishop of Worcester, taking over from Dr John Inge, who stepped down in 2024.
- Nelson's nomination was approved by HM The King and announced by Downing Street after serving as Bishop of St Germans since 2020 and Acting Bishop of Truro until May 2024.
- Before becoming a bishop, Nelson was ordained priest in 2010, served multiple parishes in Canterbury, and led L’Arche London for 13 years, focusing on Christian community and renewal.
- Nelson called his new role an “enormous privilege,” stating he looks forward to meeting diverse communities and leading unity and bold responses in Worcester’s Diocese as it plans many new worshipping communities.
- Nelson will leave St Germans at year-end, be enthroned early next year, and continue to serve as Bishop to the Armed Forces while supporting plans to renew churches and engage youth in Worcester.
