11-Year-Old Boy Loses Hand After Florida Alligator Attack
Florida wildlife officials trapped an 8-foot alligator after the boy lost his right hand while fishing, and he has since returned home.
An 11-year-old Pennsylvania boy returned home after losing his right hand in an alligator attack while fishing at Nelson Fish Camp in Marion County, Florida.
The alligator attacked suddenly as Brodie was releasing a fish back into the water, and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers later captured and killed a nearly 9-foot alligator believed responsible.
Brodie's father jumped on the animal to pry its mouth open, but the gator rolled, breaking his arm and severing his hand; doctors later amputated his right hand at the wrist.
Brodie returned to Pennsylvania over the July 4th weekend to continue his recovery, while a GoFundMe page has raised over $17,000 of its $25,000 goal for medical expenses.
Family members say Brodie is "adjusting to his new normal" and remains in good spirits, though he faces a long road of physical and emotional recovery ahead.
