In 1666, Louis XIV set up his shipyards in Rochefort, located by the river, 20 kilometres from the ocean. But in order to protect this strategic site from the English fleet, he entrusted Va uban with the construction of what is known as the 'fire belt', a series of forts on the sea to which the inhabitants have finally attached themselves.
