Suspect Pleads Guilty to Murdering Lauren Heike on Phoenix Hiking Trail
Teasley also admitted to possessing child pornography, and prosecutors said DNA, cellphone data and surveillance linked him to the attack.
- Zion Teasley, 25, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the death of Lauren Heike, 29, whose body was found April 29, 2023 near a hiking trail in north Phoenix. The plea deal spares him the death penalty and ensures a life sentence.
- DNA found on Heike's shoe and surveillance footage showing Teasley running from the trail matched cellphone location data, authorities said. An autopsy revealed she had been stabbed 15 times in the upper body, with defensive wounds on her hands and forearms.
- Detectives learned Teasley was recently fired for aggressive behavior toward female coworkers and suspected theft. Police said he routinely carried a three-inch pocketknife, reportedly matching the wounds on Heike's body.
- Heike's family supported the plea, stating it spares them trial trauma and allows them to focus on her life rather than her death. Teasley faces formal sentencing on Dec. 4.
- While Teasley pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation of a minor in a separate case from March 2019, a 2020 burglary charge was dismissed as part of the plea agreement.
