On Sunday, Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen became the first Chinese player to win the China Open, defeating French Open winner Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-4 in Beijing.
The 24-year-old Zheng needed a wildcard entry after missing nearly six months due to an elbow injury on her dominant right arm, which had caused her ranking to plummet.
During the final, Zheng saved three break points while trailing 5-4 in the first set before securing the break, then served a decisive ace to clinch her first WTA 1000 title.
This victory marks Zheng's first title in two years, following a stellar 2024 when she reached the Australian Open final and won the Paris Olympics singles title at Roland Garros.
Despite the straight-sets loss, French Open winner Mirra Andreeva is set to reach a career-high ranking, having competed against the partisan crowd in Beijing.
Zheng Qinwen has fulfilled her dream of winning home at the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing.
