Zelenskyy seeks Patriot systems from US to counter Russia’s power grid attacks
- On Monday, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy requested 25 Patriot air-defense systems from the United States, acknowledging they are costly and could take years to manufacture.
- Combined missile and drone strikes have intensified, hitting local switchyards region by region and coinciding with Russia’s battlefield push toward Pokrovsk, Donetsk region, causing scheduled blackouts this year.
- NATO is coordinating regular deliveries, Zelenskyy said Ukraine recently received more Patriot systems from Germany while European allies and Canada buy much U.S. equipment.
- In the east, fighting for Pokrovsk has Russia assembling 170,000 troops, while the Institute for the Study of War expects a quicker tempo as more forces move into the city.
- Amid nearly four years since the invasion, it is not known how many Patriot systems are in Ukraine even as international peace efforts appear to have dissipated.
