Green Leader Under Pressure After UK Poll Defeat Clouded by Party’s Anti-Zionist Stance
Polanski said the Greens’ vote share rose 22.4% despite losing the seat and facing pressure over a motion on Zionism.
On Thursday, Green Party leader Zack Polanski lost the Holborn and St Pancras by-election to Labour candidate Sagal Abdi-Wali, who secured 45% of the vote to his 33%, but vowed to remain as leader.
Polanski faced internal pressure after Green Party members voted last week to declare Zionism a form of racism, with critics arguing he should have participated in the debate during his campaign.
Vivien Lichtenstein, leader of the Jewish Greens, said Polanski made a 'big mistake' and should resign, while former Green Party leader Caroline Lucas called the motion 'dangerous' and 'flawed from top to bottom.'
In interviews on Friday, Polanski insisted he would not have voted for the 'imperfect' motion and stated, 'I'm more than ready to continue' as leader of the Green Party.
Polanski remains outside the House of Commons and faces a leadership vote in 2027, though he defended his record by citing party growth from 60,000 to 220,000 members under his leadership.
