YouTube Is Upgrading Old Videos to HD and 4K Automatically - but You Can Opt Out
YouTube will let creators and viewers control AI upscaling of videos below 1080p and label enhanced content, aiming to improve quality on large displays.
- YouTube unveiled Super Resolution on October 29, 2025, an AI feature that auto-upscales videos uploaded below 1080p to HD.
 - Because low-resolution clips look fine on small phones but not big screens, millions of videos uploaded between 2005 and 2010 will be upscaled for better viewing on 50+ inch TVs.
 - Creators retain control over their library, as original files and original resolution remain intact with an opt-out, while viewers see a "Super Resolution" label to toggle versions in the settings menu.
 - YouTube will push upscaled videos across mobile, web and TV, applying AI to many millions of videos while some creators accused unannounced upscaling in YouTube Shorts, sparking debate over a Will Smith clip.
 - As part of a wider trend, YouTube positions itself among platforms using AI to modernize older media, calling Super Resolution its most advanced AI application to enhance viewing experience.
