Yorkshire Wildlife Park to reopen after man killed by tiger
The park said Altai the Amur tiger will remain in care as authorities continue investigations into the fatal enclosure breach.
On Thursday, October 15, Doncaster Coroner's Court officially opened an inquest into the death of 24-year-old William Chapman, who died after entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park on Saturday, October 10.
Chapman climbed two fences into the Land of the Tigers enclosure at 1:30 PM, where he encountered Altai, a Siberian tiger, and suffered multiple traumatic injuries.
The inquest heard Chapman, a self-employed trader, had a diagnosis of schizophrenia and suffered previous bouts of psychosis, yet was deemed "highly functioning and independent with no care requirements" under Doncaster mental health services.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park will reopen Friday, October 16, with officials confirming Altai is "safe and well" and will not be euthanized following the incident.
City of Doncaster Council and the local NHS trust launched health and safety investigations, with a full inquest scheduled for March 18, 2027, to determine systemic factors.
