Tai Chi, yoga, walking and jogging proven to improve sleep quality and potentially ease insomnia: Study
CHINA, JUL 16 – A meta-analysis of 22 trials involving 1,348 participants found yoga, tai chi, walking, and jogging significantly improve sleep duration and reduce insomnia symptoms.
- On Tuesday, the meta-analysis published in BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine found low-impact exercise like yoga, Tai chi, and walking can ease insomnia symptoms and improve sleep quality.
- Insomnia affects between 4% and 22% of people, with about 14.5% of adults reporting trouble falling asleep most days in the past month.
- Yoga helped people sleep nearly two hours longer each night and improved sleep efficiency by 15%, according to the meta-analysis findings.
- Recommending exercise as a complementary treatment, Paruthi said the meta-analysis evidence is compelling but not sufficient as a sole remedy, and she frequently recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week.
- Further research is needed to develop standardized regimens, and authors suggest including low-cost, accessible exercises in primary care and public health programs, as they improved sleep measures and worked better than other treatments for up to two years.
