Yellowstone Receives Record $105 Million Donation for Long-Term Stewardship
The permanent fund will support research, visitor access and infrastructure as Yellowstone faces $1.2 billion in deferred maintenance, officials said.
- On Monday, Yellowstone National Park and Colorado-based energy infrastructure company Tallgrass launched a $105 million conservation and stewardship fund, calling it the largest single private gift in National Park Service history.
- The Park Service currently estimates $1.2 billion in deferred maintenance and repairs across the 2.2 million-acre reserve, prompting urgent infrastructure priorities including a $35 million visitor center at Norris Geyser Basin.
- Tallgrass senior vice president Steven Davidson stated the park's regional significance drove the decision, noting it "has this really outsized impact on three different states' economies." The Tallgrass WYld Yellowstone Initiative targets Wyoming students and families.
- Despite the donation's size, the Park Service will retain full authority over park management and project approvals. Davidson stated the initiative's intent remains focused on conservation, not reputation management.
- Tallgrass separately faces scrutiny over its $7 billion Cheyenne Power Hub project near Cheyenne, which encountered pushback from Laramie County neighbors concerned about water and land use. The company recently divested from oil to prioritize carbon capture infrastructure.
