XL bully owner jailed over dog attack death
James Harrison Trimble-Pettitt was jailed for five years after his two XL bully dogs fatally mauled neighbour Ian Price, with poor dog management cited as a key factor, experts said.
- At Stafford Crown Court, James Harrison Trimble-Pettitt, 32, was sentenced on Thursday for two counts of owning dogs that caused Ian Price's death.
- Via and Ares regularly escaped from Main Street, Staffordshire, and an expert witness instructed by the prosecution found poor living conditions likely fuelled extreme aggression.
- Witnesses said the attack lasted 12 minutes after Mr Price was shepherding a loose dog at around 3.10pm, as Ares approached aggressively and both dogs attacked, with passers-by trying to intervene.
- Judge John Edwards said the attack was an `appalling act of savagery` and disqualified James Harrison Trimble-Pettitt from owning dogs indefinitely, describing the incident as devastating for the family.
- The case contributed to a Government ban on XL bullies after Mr Price's death, making it a criminal offence to own an XL bully in England and Wales without a certificate of exemption.
