Xi Jinping to Visit North Korea on June 8-9, Xinhua Says
The rare trip comes as North Korea expands its nuclear program and Beijing seeks to keep Pyongyang in its orbit, analysts say.
- On Monday, Chinese President Xi Jinping began a two-day visit to Pyongyang, his first trip to North Korea in seven years and his first international journey this year. The visit follows recent summits Jinping hosted with President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing.
- Jinping aims to reassert Beijing's influence over an emboldened Kim Jong Un, who possesses a rapidly expanding nuclear arsenal and a deepening defense partnership with Russia. Jinping seeks to demonstrate China remains Pyongyang's most important economic lifeline and political patron.
- Speculation has intensified regarding a potential third Trump-Kim summit, with analysts in Seoul suggesting a deal similar to the 2019 Hanoi negotiations could be revived, setting aside formal denuclearization for later.
- Kim may view engagement as a diplomatic victory if Trump refrains from raising denuclearization, as the regime prioritizes survival over disarmament. Unless denuclearization is explicitly required, Kim may be willing to meet Trump.
- Such a deal would claim to bring peace to the Korean Peninsula, ending a state of war lasting more than seventy years. Kim would commit to capping his stockpile of over fifty nuclear warheads and pledging not to proliferate technology.
