WWII-era tank finds new home at Minnesota Military and Veterans Museum
The restored M3A1 Stuart will anchor the museum’s World War II gallery, which officials say will be the first exhibit visitors see.
On Friday, April 17, workers moved an M3A1 Stuart tank into the Minnesota Military and Veterans Museum at Camp Ripley in Little Falls after restoration at the Camp Ripley Combined Support Maintenance Shop. Executive Director Randal Dietrich called the tank 'emblematic of an important Brainerd story' for the World War II gallery.
After sitting outside the Brainerd Armory for almost 30 years, the tank was relocated in October 2021 to Camp Ripley for restoration. Crews there removed decades of wear, tear and rust from the vintage vehicle before its April installation.
M3 Stuart tanks were the primary vehicles used by the 194th Tank Battalion in the Philippines during World War II and were the first American-crewed tanks to engage enemy forces in combat, occurring in December 1941 against the Japanese. Members of the 194th Tank Battalion Regiment attended the tank's placement.
Dietrich said the museum will build a World War II setting around the restored tank to give guests 'a sense of what it was like to be in a tank crew,' positioning the Stuart as the centerpiece of the first gallery visitors encounter in September.
Opening September 12-13, the $32.7 million, 40,000-square-foot facility will display additional World War II vehicles including a Huey helicopter, Humvee and H-13 MASH helicopter alongside Minnesota's 40 and 8 Merci boxcar, donated by French citizens in 1949.
