WSDOT awards $12 million to five electric vehicle companies to increase charging station access statewide
The Washington State Department of Transportation awarded $12.16 million to five companies to build 14 stations with 96 ports covering 528 miles of highways.
- On Thursday the Washington State Department of Transportation awarded $12 million in NEVI grants to expand EV charging access statewide.
- After a federal pause in 2025, the Trump administration attempted to withhold NEVI funds, but Washington Attorney General Nick Brown and 13 states sued, leading U.S. District Judge Tana Lin to rule the withholding unlawful.
- Selected vendors include Electric Era, Energy Northwest, EV Gateway, EVgo and Tesla, who will build and operate 14 charging stations along Interstate 90 and U.S. Routes 97, 195 and 395 within 24 months.
- Washington Secretary of Transportation Julie Meredith said the projects fill key gaps and will make EV travel more convenient, while WSDOT will begin a second-round call for applications including Interstate 405 and Interstate 5.
- The awards stem from Congress's $5 billion Bipartisan Infrastructure Law program to build a national charger network expanding access near the Idaho and Oregon state lines and Canadian border.
