Man Charged, 3 Hospitalized After Wrong-Way Crash in Chicopee
Jose Santiago faces drunk-driving and negligent-operation charges after a wrong-way crash sent a trooper, his K-9 and another driver to hospitals.
On Saturday, Jose Santiago, 28, of Holyoke, drove the wrong way on I-91 in Chicopee, striking a Massachusetts State Police K-9 Unit cruiser and a passenger vehicle around 4 a.m.
This marks the third incident since early May involving a trooper struck by a wrong-way operator, following the death of State Trooper Kevin Trainor, said Massachusetts State Police Colonel Geoffrey Noble.
Troopers from the Springfield Barracks initiated a rolling roadblock near Exit 9 on I-91 north with emergency lights activated "in an effort to safely stop" the vehicle, officials said.
Santiago faces charges including operating under the influence of alcohol and negligent operation; the injured trooper, his K-9, and the other driver were transported to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
Gov. Maura Healey recently signed legislation to decrease wrong-way incidents, and officials plan to install hundreds of thermal detection systems throughout 2026 and 2027 to alert drivers traveling wrongly.
