UN releases US$125 million for 14 underfunded humanitarian crises around the world

  • The United Nations has released $125 million from its emergency relief fund to support underfunded humanitarian operations in 14 countries, with Afghanistan and Yemen receiving the largest amounts. The funding will also benefit Burkina Faso, Myanmar, Mali, Haiti, Venezuela, Central African Republic, Mozambique, Cameroon, the Palestinian territories, Malawi, Bangladesh, and Uganda.
  • The release of the funds reflects the increasing humanitarian needs and the shortfall in regular donor funding. The UN has appealed for over $55 billion to assist 250 million people affected by various crises, but has only received about $16 billion so far.
  • The UN World Food Program is being forced to cut food assistance for an additional 2 million hungry people in Afghanistan due to lack of funding, bringing the total number of Afghans affected this year to 10 million. The program can now only provide food to 3 million people out of the 21 million in need, requiring $1 billion for the next six months.
