Switzerland defeated the United States 3-0 in their Group B ice hockey world championship match on Monday in Herning.
Switzerland, the runner-up from last year, took the lead when Damien Riat scored the opening goal late in the first period.
Jonas Siegenthaler and Dean Kukan added goals later, while Leonardo Genoni stopped 23 shots to record the shutout.
Kevin Fiala assisted on the final goal in his first world championship game and said, “After the first goal we did a better job.”
The United States experienced their first defeat in the tournament, but coach Ryan Warsofsky expressed confidence that the team still has much more to offer.
