For the first time in 52 years, Argentina’s government has confirmed that it will not be buying the broadcasting rights to the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada and broadcasting it free-to-air. The move – which saves an estimated US$7 million – forms part of austerity for state media.
Even without official confirmation, the government would desist from buying the rights for economic reasons, but in 2022 the accounts closed without loss to the state.
