Workers Evacuated as Emergency Services Tackling Fire at Steelworks

Fire crews and police remained at the steelworks overnight as the cause was not yet established and all personnel were evacuated safely.

  • A major fire broke out at the Tata Steel plant in Port Talbot on Wednesday evening after alarms sounded around 8pm. Firefighters arrived to tackle the blaze as all staff were evacuated safely from the processing lines.
  • Tata Steel confirmed the blaze is unrelated to the controlled demolition of an empty Gas Holder conducted earlier Wednesday evening. The company stated all personnel were accounted for and evacuated safely following both incidents.
  • Residents described the scene as "very apocalyptic" as thick black smoke spread across Port Talbot and as far as Maesteg. South Wales Police advised locals to keep windows and doors closed while emergency teams tackled the fire.
  • Rapid Relief Team UK volunteers served 125 hot meals to around 100 responders overnight, arriving within 90 minutes of the callout. The team provided "incredibly demanding and hazardous" support as emergency services remained at the scene.
  • On Thursday morning, emergency crews continued working to fully extinguish the fire at the Port Talbot site. Authorities urged residents to avoid the area and only call 999 if property or lives are in immediate danger.
