Wood banks prep for long winter months
Local wood banks are giving free firewood to seniors, veterans and low-income families as prices climb and demand grows.
- Recently, volunteers with the United Way of Lamoille County held an annual firewood workday in Morristown to prepare for winter as demand for heating assistance surges across Vermont.
- Burning wood is cost- and labor-intensive, creating significant barriers for older residents, while the price of a cord has skyrocketed to around $500 in Vermont.
- Eric Axelrod of the nonprofit Wood4Good received 50 new applications for firewood this year; one elderly customer wrote that she nearly froze to death last winter huddling under an electric blanket.
- Vermont Warm Hearts operator Stephanie Ferro coordinates with the United Way to share resources, saying, "I want to get involved and let's see if we can work together."
- While several towns in Chittenden County allocate funds for wood banks, municipalities in Lamoille County have not yet followed suit, leaving organizations reliant on volunteers and state-donated timber through Wood Warms.
