Woman Who Schemed to Lure Vulnerable Migrants to US for Sex Work Pleads Guilty
Prosecutors said the family-run scheme forced migrants into prostitution and used the proceeds to finance more smuggling.
- On Wednesday, ringleader Carmen Rivero-De Caldera pleaded guilty to sex trafficking, conspiracy, and money laundering. She operated a Nashville, Tennessee-based scheme forcing vulnerable women into prostitution after smuggling them into the United States.
- Beginning several years ago, the family-run operation lured women from Central and South America with false promises of legitimate employment. Once in transit, traffickers demanded escalating payments, forcing victims into commercial sex to settle arbitrary debts.
- Victims were surveilled on a "near-constant basis" to prevent escape and faced threats, with some fearing ties to the Tren de Aragua cartel. One victim reported a $35,000 fine for traveling with her 5-year-old daughter.
- Rivero-De Caldera faces up to life in prison for her role in the trafficking ring. All eight codefendants, including her children, have also pleaded guilty to charges related to the operation.
- The Justice Department appointed prosecutor Alessandra Serano last month to coordinate trafficking strategies across federal agencies. Serano must submit a report updating combat efforts within 120 days of her appointment.
