Woman trapped in mud rescued from rising tide: 'We were racing against time'
Five firefighters used a mud board and a state Fish & Wildlife boat to pull her free before the incoming tide covered her.
On Wednesday, five Olympia firefighters rescued a woman trapped in mud near Squaxin Park in Olympia, Washington, as the tide rose around her.
A 911 call at noon on May 13 reported the woman stuck near Ellis Cove beach with mud up to her thighs and water at her waist after she attempted to walk between beaches.
Rescuers deployed a mud board to stabilize two firefighters on the unstable flat while personnel on a state Department of Fish & Wildlife boat pulled the woman to safety.
"We were racing against time," said Olympia Fire Lieutenant Steven Busz, adding that water would have covered her head at full tide and that victims cannot free themselves without assistance.
Busz warned that "everything around the shores are tidal flats, and it's all going to be soft unless it's something that never sees tidal water," as Olympia Fire urges the public to admire the flats from a safe distance.
