Woman gives birth hours after fire destroys her family's Massachusetts home
Fire crews from nearby communities helped contain the blaze as the pregnant resident gave birth at Massachusetts General Hospital, officials said.
On Monday, Chiara Keenan gave birth to daughter Giannina Grace Keenan at Winchester Hospital shortly after evacuating her family home in Winthrop, Massachusetts, which was destroyed by fire Sunday.
The four-alarm blaze erupted at 155-157 River Road shortly after 4:30 p.m. Sunday, spreading rapidly from one home to an adjacent house and forcing four families to evacuate.
Investigators are examining whether an electric vehicle sparked the blaze. Winthrop Fire Chief Stephen Calandra stated, "Once gets going, you put water on it—it doesn't do anything; it's hundreds of thousands of gallons."
Homeowner Maurizio Marcoccio, Keenan's father, expressed heartbreak to WCVB: "That's the emotional part, because they did such a good job with the nursery and all that."
Neighbors are rallying to support the displaced families by offering shelter and collecting items for residents who lost belongings when both homes were deemed a total loss.
